Electrocardiography(ECG) measures and records electrical currents from the heart. This is useful in diagnosing abnormal cardiac rhythm and heart muscle damage. Electrodes attached by velcro strips are strapped to the pet's limbs, and the ECG machine transmits the information over the phone lines to a board-certified cardiologist. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote the health and welfare of companion animals through a reduction in the incidence of genetic disease. The dysplasia control database of the OFA is a voluntary program established to evaluate radiographs and to identify evidence of dysplasia or other orthopedic problems. Radiographs (X-rays) are taken at The Animal Clinic and reviewed with the owner. If the owner wishes to receive certification, the radiographs are sent to the OFA. Veterinary radiologists will review submitted radiographs, and a consensus report will be returned to the owner of record and the referring veterinarian. Animals must be 24 months old when the radiographs are taken to be assigned a breed OFA number. Hips, elbows or both can be evaluated. OFA now offers DNA-based disease testing.
