Pancreatitis

 

     The pancreas produces insulin for the control of glucose and also plays an important role in digestion.  Pancreatitis is a serious illness, which is an inflammation of the pancreas and can be accompanied by areas of necrosis and infection.

     The cause of pancreatitis can be unknown, but is commonly caused by dietary indiscretion and breed predisposition.    

     To diagnose pancreatitis, the doctor will do an exam, check for abdominal pain, fever, and dehydration. The doctor will order tests that may include: blood test, x-rays and biopsy. Treatment may include, hospitalization, IV fluids, anti-vomiting medication, antibiotics, and pain medication.  To help reduce the incidence of pancreatitis; keep your pet at a healthy weight, avoid high fat diets and table scraps.
